What’s with Organic Clothes for Babies?
What’s more adorable than a fashionable newborn? Consider that cute floral coming-home outfit. Or the matching beanie with the super-soft pom-pom, the footie made from that striking blue triangle fabric, and the sweet pink fish-print onesie.
These products float by us almost without notice, usually because we’re focused on the lovable children inside them—but there’s a lot more that goes into high-end baby fashion than meets the eye.
Hyon Joung, the owner of Baby Q’s Designs, creates baby clothing and other items for children’s boutiques along the east coast. She discussed a few key elements to the best baby fashions.
Handmade items are a top priority, and so is the ability to customize the look you want for your baby.
At the same time, baby clothing made from organic fabric has become more than a trend, and there are some good reasons for using only the best fabrics on baby’s skin.

Organic Baby Fashion
“All of my organic prints are custom printed in New York,” Joung said.
While she also makes non-organic items, the importance of organic fabrics has skyrocketed in the last few years.
Baby skin is 30 percent thinner than adult skin, and babies absorb chemicals more easily than adults do. Buying organic could make a big difference to your baby.

Joung hand-makes every piece she sells. This gives her complete control of the quality and allows her to put extra care into the details. The items become a durable work of art, right down to the hand-crafted pom-poms on top of the beanies.
The best way to find hand-made baby fashion is to seek out someone like Joung, who will take individual orders as well as large ones.
Joung occasionally takes small individual orders for baby clothes and 100% wool felt ball garlands, but be warned—there may be a waiting list.
You can also search for handmade items at online boutiques such as Vivi’s Jewels or Label Jane to check out some of these top-of-the-line products while you’re waiting for your hand-made order to arrive.

Customized Baby Fashion
“I can say most of my items in my shop are custom due to their made-to-order nature,” Joung said. “Custom orders occur when a customer cannot find the exact item she wants from my shop.
It often means a customer likes a certain print for different items.
For example, she wants a blue star print that I used for a beanie to be made into a footie or leggings.”
Other shops customize baby clothing by personalizing it, and this often includes embroidering the child’s name on the clothing. You can find customizable clothing online at shops like BuyBuyBaby or Zazzle.
