Homeward Bound. Garfield. The Adventures of Milo and Otis. The Incredible Journey. Babe: Pig in the City. Do you remember these shows? They’re heartwarming stories about pets who get lost and have to find their way home.
It’s fun to snuggle up with your kiddos for a movie night with one of these titles, but it’s something else entirely when one of your pets actually gets lost. One in three pets gets lost at least once during their lifetime, and the American Humane Society estimates around 10 million dogs or cats are lost or stolen every year.
Thankfully, there are some preventive measures you can take and some products that can help you find your beloved pets if they ever do get lost.
Love Up Your Pet
According to the Humane Society of the United States, pets sometimes run away if they’re bored, lonely, or frustrated. This can happen if you’re at work and your dog is left alone all day. In order to keep your pet happy, make sure he gets plenty of people time. Take him on daily walks, romp with him or play fetch at the park, and spend five or ten minutes each day teaching him new tricks.
You can also attend an obedience class together. When you get home, snuggle up with your pet with something like a Melior plush pet bed, where he feels secure, safe, and loved.
If you have to be gone for a few hours at a time, keep your pet in the house where he can’t get away. For longer time periods, consider hiring a pet sitter or take your pet to local doggie daycare.
Be Careful on Walks
If you’ve got a puppy or a vibrant breed that needs a lot of exercise, they might need a little extra attention on their walks. Rather than using an ordinary leash and collar set, try using something like the Melior all-in-one no pull dog harness. A sturdy harness can help support your pets and keep them from choking themselves if they tend to pull hard.
If you’re going to be outside while the sun is down, make sure to put a reflective collar on your pet, as well. Not only will this help you find your pet if he does get away, but it will help drivers see your pet so he doesn’t get hit by a car.
Step in Harness
We all love our pets & want the best for them so having an easy way to get them into a harness is just loving, not to mention it makes life a slight bit easier for us. If you or your pup is having a hard time getting into a walking harness then it may be best to try out a step-in harness.
Easy Walk Harness
Walking the dog with ease is less stressful for them & for ourselves, if we had to put ourselves in a harness then we would choose something easy right?
Of course, we would.
Loving our pets is something we are built with & feels good so let’s think about what they go through by putting ourselves in their shoes…..Easy walking with LOVE. Giving that extra thought can add time to your loved one’s life while bringing that happy to see you look come more often.
Consider Other Precautions
In spite of all the steps you take, sometimes the unthinkable happens, and your dog slips away. Be prepared for times like these by making sure your dog is microchipped or has a smart collar so you can find him.
You might also consider looking into pet insurance policies. Getting an insurance policy can help you pay for vet bills if your dog gets away and gets hurt before you find him.
